Talking Points: The Border Issue

  • We agree that we need to work toward a solution at our borders. But the truth is, Republicans abandoned their own bill that President Biden was set to sign when Trump ordered the House Republicans to scratch it, afraid Biden would get credit for an issue he intends to make the focus of his campaign. Republicans also walked away at the last minute from a border compromise with Obama in 2013.

  • Additionally, the GOP has refused to fund the additional judges and administrators required to process the backlog.

  • The GOP vastly distorts the numbers under Biden by counting each attempt to cross as another person when so many try to cross multiple times.

  • The number also includes those who sought out border agents to attempt to claim asylum and those who attempted to do so at official ports of entry, something Trump essentially abandoned during his presidency.

  • Improved detection accounts for a significant percentage of the higher number of apprehensions

  • Economic desperation coming out of the pandemic, increased political violence, drug gangs and general instability is driving so many more people to risk everything to seek a better life in the US

  • It is a myth that immigrants represent a security threat. Studies show they commit crime at a far lower rate than native-born citizens.

  • Immigration in some form is essential for our economy. Dairy farmers and meatpacking companies are desperate for people to fill the jobs that Americans refuse to do and it all
