The New Maps are Here!

Governor Evers has signed the new maps into law!

It is projected that the Democratic seats in the Assembly could go from 35 to 46 (out of a total of 99).   In the Senate, Democratic seats could go from 11 to 16 (out of a total of 33), with the potential of a greater Democratic win in 2026.   But, it all depends on us!

More about the SENATE. Only the EVEN numbered senate seats are up this term. The ODD numbered senate seats are up in two years. So, a senator who is NOT up for re-election this year but has been redistricted out of their district, may still represent that district. In two years, they will have to decide to move or not run. Example: In 2022, Senator Rachael Cabral-Guevara (R) was elected to represent the 19th Senate District. Becaise of the new district lines, she now actuially lives in the 18th, but she will still be allowed to represent the 19th. In 2026, she will need to move into the 19th or not run in that district. Or, she could resign her senate seat now and run in the 18th this year.

Potential candidates can now set the groundwork for their races.  Nomination signatures can be collected starting April 15. FYI - There will be a signature gathering event at the Outagamie Dems office on Saturday, April 20, from 10am to 1 pm for our local candidates.

QUESTIONS

Could there be more legal action?  That is still a possibility, but it would be a long shot.

What about the Congressional maps? The WI Supreme Court has denied the motion to take them up. Unfortunately, Justice Protasiewicz recused. The current maps will remain in effect for the 2024 election. Maybe in 2026?
