If you want to save your Social Security, vote Biden

By David Haas

The future of Social Security is on the ballot this year, and the candidates have made their positions clear.

The program faces a shortfall in funding in 2034, and there are two ways to make it solvent. We can raise Social Security taxes on the wealthy, or we can cut benefits to all Americans.

Presiden Biden said in his State of the Union speech that he favors raising Social Security taxes on the wealthy. His opponent has tried to avoid the question, but in a recent interview reported on CNBC, he said, “ There is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting and in terms of also the theft and bad management of entitlements.”

So, you have a choice. Do you want to see the wealthy pay their fair share of the cost of Social Security, or do you want to be cheated of the benefits that you have earned by paying the Social Security tax throughout your working life? If you are like most people, you will depend on Social Security for a big part of your income in retirement, and a cut in your benefits may well plunge you into poverty.

It seems to me that the choice is clear. If you want a secure retirement, you should vote to reelect President Biden. On the other hand, if you expect to die young and don’t care about other people, you can vote to elect his opponent.
